Forum Theatre

“Theatre is a form of knowledge; it should and can also be a means of transforming society. Theatre can help us build a future, rather than just waiting for it.”

Augusto Boal

  1. Boal describes theatre as "the capacity possessed by human beings . . . to observe themselves in action.” Forum theatre breaks through the barrier between performers and audience, putting them on an equal footing. Originally the technique was developed by Boal as a political tool for change. Through my research it has become apparent that Forum theatre is an infuential and powerful tool.

  2. Forum Theatre is a technique used in acting out a scene. The group watching are told to stop the action when necessary and create another action to change the piece round. The actors can stop if they need help and sometimes people even create new roles. Forum Theatre is actually quite powerful and gives the public a voice which they did not have before. In regard to the quote above, "it should and can also be a means of transforming society. Theatre can help us build a future, rather than just waiting for it.” That is exactly what Forum Theatre does, it helps the public speak out about how they feel and revolutionise our society.
